A small town defends itself from the Japanese by using a network of tunnels during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The film is regarded as one of the first to discuss the use of tunnels in war and is the most watched war movie in China. While popular upon its release in 1965, its fame would not peak until nearly a decade later, when it became one of the "Three Old Fights" - a collection of three war films from pre-1966 that were given wide circulation during the Cultural Revolution.
